Big Pearl Paintball

Paintball fields and stores at their finest!!!

Overall we really had a great time, our teams did really well.  Day one was one of the most fun days of paintball that I've ever played.  Lots of back and forth between the sides.  Players for the most part were honest.  Most of the refs were doing their job.

I was very impressed with the VMI cadets.  Other than Brubaker & Ruane all the cadets were new.  When we first started the game they looked like rabbits that had just been let out of their cage for the first time in their life.  Once they got their barring our group of 9 cadets two advisors and 3 more Carpenter Bee’s pushed the blue team all the way back to their respawn.  Only to lose the ground game when to many players on our team were out of the game.

While all the cadets did very well considering their short time on the team several of the new cadets stood out.  Cadet Buehlmann made many suicide runs on the opposing team.  This makes the other team use up all their paintballs so they won’t have any at the end of the day.  Cadet Harth always seemed to be at the front.

At one point I moved of the field with Buehlmann and Harth.  We pressed all the way across the field, bunkering 4-6 opposing palyers.  I made it all the way to a hut where I shoot out bunches of blue team players.  Eventually running down to my last 4-5 paintballs.  I had several opposing players closing in.  My only defense was to wait until they got really close to be sure of my shot.  Had they known I was so low on paintballs they would have charged me I’m sure.  Just when it seemed like all hope was gone Major Driscoll comes running across the field to reinforce me.  I stole a pod of paintballs and bunkered two more players to help advance our cause before getting shot out.  I probably would have made it longer, but one of the players that I went and bunkered was refusing to call himself out until I shot him a about 12 times in a row.  I had been shooting him for the entire time I was in the small building, but once I had players that could take my spot I wanted to force him to get off the field.

Some of the paint was extremely brittle.  Only the players shooting the Empire Axe could shoot it.  I’m not one of these people that is a fan boy, but that was impressive.

Game play area is well done.  Speed Ravine had a big section roped off as "radio active".  You could move through it but you couldn't stop in it.  I wish they would have roped of a different area, but it was a cool concept.

Plot line was well thought out, but a few to many propts.  There weren't any vehicles, but it actually made for a better game in my opinion.  There was about 150 players.  I think there might have only been 50 on the field at any given time.  Again the gam

Pricing for the event and at the store was real reasonable.  In some cases their prices were below the internet.

I still have a concussion from Power Armor guy shooting hot. And all the refs deserted this guy later in the day.  I eventually demanded that he be chrono'd and he clocked 299. His gun was so caked with paint he could only get off one shot at the chrono, which means that he had to have his gun cranked all the way up. The ref clocking him tried to lie to me about it. Some guy by the name of "Rook" played through on several of our players with Power Armor guy. But no ref was around to call it. Not trying to go on a rant, but that particular situation got out of hand fast. A character player like that needs at least 2 refs. In one case "Megan" and "Kevin" spent the entire day flirting with each other instead of refing. At one point they were actually play fighting with each other right in the middle of a live paintball field.  Don't get me wrong some refs were doing a great job, but you can't let a player go nuts like that. Not saying we won't ever come back, but it put a damper on a great weekend.

To be clear all the refs vacated the area, so who was going to make the call on that one. I had to have a freakout to get someone to chrono "power armor" guy. When he did chrono him he said "YOUR GOOD" real loud for everyone to hear not realizing I was standing behind him just outside the chrono area. The ref then tried to give me some BS excuse about how all guns shoot hot from time to time. To my knowledge that player was never whole punched, and was told by the ref "adjust your gun and head back in". I didn't see him back in the game, but I was done for the day. That players tone seemed like one of the worst players that could be picked for such a role. He over shoot several new players with a gun that was cranked up.

I talked to "Doc" who made it clear to me that things shouldn't have been done that way.  He was very nice and apologetic.  He listened to everything I had to say, but at the end of the day I still have a concussion and a lot of new players got turned off to the sport.  You can't rewind the clock and lip service only goes so far.

I did have a good time and I think our team will go back eventually.  Unfortunately I see these sorts of problems at almost every field we go to.  While it was inexcusable, the rest of the event was a blast and ran well.

I didn't get to play with John Lloyd, Matt Ader, and Matt Shrewsbury.  However our combined effort secured a Most Valuable Team Award for our team.  John and the Matt's secured a lot of prompts and I'm sure this made a big difference in the awards.
